Meet Thomas Slocumb
Clinical Mental Health Counseling Intern
Thomas approaches therapy as a deeply human process grounded in honesty, respect, and meaningful connection. Visibility and a sense of freedom within relationships are primary aspects of growth and healing. He wants people to feel seen while navigating complex developmental trauma, attachment and adoption-related concerns, sexuality, and complex relationships. By creating a space where people feel freedom to engage honestly about difficult and confusing experiences, fear of judgment and the pressure to have everything figured out fall away. In this, resilience is forged and momentum is gained.
Currently completing a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Thomas integrates Existential Therapy, ACT, and CBT with strong interests in attachment work, personal narrative, and the mind-body connection. His approach is flexible and relational—at times practical and solution-focused, and at other times slower, reflective, and emotionally explorative.
As an adoptee who navigated the integration of his families, he understands the profoundly personal experience of people touched by adoption. In meeting other people where they are in their stories, he provides an open-minded connection to those who seek deeper, judgement-free work with someone who is no stranger to misunderstood aspects of identity. Lifelong inclusion, warmth and support from his adoptive family taught him how foundational community, transparency and sources of unconditional love are. In tandem, growth into autonomy, self respect and curiosity taught him how to love and accept his birth family, and to extend this greater acceptance towards himself as a product of two converging stories. These foundations characterize his approach to adoption and broader concerns about attachment, trauma and sexuality.
Thomas believes therapy is not about “fixing” people, but about understanding oneself more honestly, developing greater freedom and flexibility, and building a life that feels authentic and deeply lived. He views healing as a process, abeit sometimes messy, of returning to the parts of ourselves that were always worthy of being known, respected, and cared for.
In his personal life, he enjoys all things outdoors like hiking with his dog Bjorn and kayaking, as well as indoor rock climbing and keeping his porch garden alive. He has lived in multiple cities across the Southeast, and prior to becoming a therapist, pursued a culinary education in Barcelona. At present, he mostly enjoys his culinary roots through cooking with friends and family. Togetherness, adventure, creativity and joy towards the natural world shape how he interacts with people and all areas of life.
All services are provided as part of his internship training and are under the supervision of Erin Rayburn, a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist Supervisor, Licensed Professional Counselor.
